  • Level 3 – Used when a heavy texture or thick wall covering will be applied.
  • Level 4 – The standard finish for most painted residential walls.
  • Level 5 – A premium skim-coated finish, often used in high-end homes, feature areas, or rooms with large windows and critical lighting.

Higher finish levels require more coats of compound, more sanding, more inspection, and more time. That is why one drywall quote can be very different from another. The difference is usually not just price — it is the amount of preparation and detail being included.

Quality Begins Before the Mud

A great drywall finish starts before any compound is applied.

Poor drywall installation creates unnecessary work and can leave imperfections that are difficult to completely hide later. Even a skilled finisher can only do so much if the drywall was installed poorly.

A professional drywall installation includes:

  • A dark colour is being covered with a much lighter colour

When Paint and Primer in One Is Appropriate

Paint-and-primer products can work well, but only in the right situation.

If the walls are already painted, clean, and in good condition, and you are simply changing from one regular colour to another, a quality paint-and-primer product is often suitable.

However, paint and primer in one should not replace dedicated drywall primer on new drywall, heavy patching, water-damaged areas, or inconsistent surfaces.
